"Dear Monsieur Dolent

I return to you the letter addressed to you by Made [Madame] Vallette.

Naturally, I accept with pleasure your choice of draftsman -

I am going to start reading the book in question, otherwise it would be difficult to suggest an idea, knowing nothing about it -

[I hope I will] soon have the pleasure of seeing you and all my respects to Monsieur Dolent your father

Cordially [?]

Paul Gauguin

10 Rue de la Grande Chaumière."

Paul Gauguin's correspondent was Jean Dolent (1835-1909), the French writer and art critic. Dolent hosted an artist's salon at his home Villa Ottoz in the Belleville section of Paris. He was the devoted friend of many of the principal participants of the Impressionist and Symbolist Movements, and often defended them in print. His circle included Paul Gauguin, Auguste Rodin, Eugène Carrière, Bertrand Redon, Félix Bracquemond, Henri Fontaine-Latour, and Théodule Ribot.

Paul Gauguin, a jaded ex-stock broker, studied art at the Académie Colarossi. The school, which offered both public and private instruction, was established in 1870 by Italian sculptor Filippo Colarossi. A less conservative school than the state-sanctioned Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the Académie Colarossi permitted female students and teachers, and attracted many international pupils. Some of its most celebrated students included Paul Gauguin, Alberto Giacometti, Amedeo Modigliani, Camille Claudel, and Alphonse Mucha.

The "Made [Madame] Vallette" referred to in Gauguin's letter almost certainly referred to Marguerite Vallette-Eymery (1860-1953), the controversial French writer known under her nom de plume Rachilde. Madame Vallette's poetry, plays, and prose was typical of and championed the Symbolist Movement.
