Description:

Adams John 1735 - 1826 Personal Calling Cards owned by patriots John Adams, De Witt Clinton, and Lajos Kossuth.

The principal use of a visiting or personal calling card is to be left as evidence of one person's presence at the residence of another. It was also used as a way of introduction when presented to a servant upon entering.

John Adams. Engraved "Mr. John Adams." in center, measures 2.75" x 1.25". Portions soiled with small pieces missing at perimeter. Engraved name is clear. Mounted on card of same size.

De Witt Clinton. Engraved "De Witt Clinton" in center, measures 3.25" x 2". Soiling mostly at perimeter. Mounted on card of same size.

Lajos Kossuth. "Kossuth" in center, measures 3.25" x 2". At lower right edge: "p.p.c." Some soiling at perimeter. Mounted on card of same size. The initials "p. p. c." in the lower right corner stood for "pour prendre conge" (to take leave) and would be left at the door or presented to a servant. It meant that the person whose name is on the card is leaving the town, city, or in Kossuth's case, possibly, the country. It was a way of saying "farewell."
