Gilmore Patrick

Patrick S. Gilmore ANS, bandmaster & composer of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"

Paper slip signed by American composer Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1892) as "very truly yours P.S. Gilmore." Gilmore has sketched out four measures of "Columbia", a musical composition in F major, above his signature.  Inscribed "New York Dec 12v 1883" along bottom edge. Autographed slip is attached to larger cream colored sheet by 4 red wax monogrammed seals in the corners. Minor scattered residue from past or current stickers once used to mount page in scrapbook, else very good to near fine. Two minor edge tears and overall toning. Autographed slip measures 4.5" x 3.5", and larger sheet measures 6.75" x 8.125". Would make a handsome presentation piece.

Gilmore presented this autographed card in December 1883. Between 1873 and his death in 1892, Gilmore conducted a prestigious New York-based ensemble of professional musicians called the 22nd New York Regiment Band. The group, recruited from the best musicians around the world, was widely acclaimed and typically performed more than one concert a day for 19 years!

Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore was an Irish-American bandmaster who popularized the musical tradition of concert bands before John Philip Sousa (1854-1932). Gilmore composed his most famous individual work, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (1863), while serving as a soldier in the 24th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. Later in his career, Gilmore organized musical events celebrating the 1876 Centennial and 1886 inauguration of the Statue of Liberty. To name but a few additional legacies, Gilmore is credited with creating the modern concert band, first presenting popular music to the public in a "pops" format, and establishing the New Year's Eve tradition in Times Square.
