Photograph
A black and white wire photograph depicting Old West lawman Pat Garrett (top row, third from left) with a group of gentleman on their way to the inauguration of Territorial Governor George Curry (1861-1947). 1p, measuring 8" x 10", El Paso, Texas, ca. 1907. Originally captured by H. G. Clunn, exhibits docketing in an unknown hand throughout, identifying the subjects pictured. Featuring typed caption adhered verso, with backstamp from the N.E.A. Reference Department dated March 24, 1924. General age toning, creasing, and wear to corners with slight grain to image; isolated soiling at lower right. Good to fair overall, showing Garrett in the last year before his death.

Among others pictured include: W.A. Hawkins of the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad (top row, far left); William C. McDonald, future Governor of New Mexico (top row, second from left); Albert B. Fall, future Senator of New Mexico & Secretary of Interior under Warren Harding (bottom row, forth from left); and Holm O. Bursum (bottom row, fifth from left), future Senator of New Mexico.

Patrick Garrett (1850-1908) was an American lawman and customs agent most known for killing outlaw Billy the Kid. On November 2, 1880, Garrett was elected Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, but would not officially begin his term until early 1881. By this point, the Kid was already wanted for murder in the aftermath of the Lincoln County War, a feud between rival factions which began in 1878. Garrett and his men began their pursuit soon after the election, but it was not until July 14, 1881 that the Kid was corned in the middle of the night and shot by the sheriff. Later in 1882, Garrett would co-author "The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid", an account which proved to be filled with factual errors.

Albert Beacon Fall (1861-1944) was a United States senator from New Mexico and Secretary of the Interior under President Warren G. Harding who became infamous for his involvement in the Teapot Dome scandal. Fall became the only person convicted in the affair, having been found guilty of accepting bribes from oil companies so they could have access to reserves at Teapot Dome in Wyoming. Before the Watergate scandal, Teapot Dome was regarded as the "greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American politics", and greatly hurt the already shaky reputation of the Harding Administration.
