Description:

Rothschild Nathan

Paris Rothschilds LS Regarding Spanish Agent Roughly 1 Year before Napoleon III's Coup d'Etat

1p LS in German signed by Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812-1870) as "NaRothschild--" at lower right. The bifold cream mourning stationery is customized, with a 7" wide watermark of the Rothschild Family arms appearing on the first page. (See below for more information.) The London stationer's name "W Neely" is watermarked also. The inner pages are blank, and the fourth page is an integral address leaf written in French addressed to "Monsieur de Rothschild freres, Paris." Black wax seals also reveal the Rothschild Family arms. With light expected paper folds throughout and isolated discoloration verso. 7.875" x 10".

The letter, written in London on September 4, 1851, appears to concern the recommendation of a Spanish agent named "Herr Oliveira" related to the Rothschild banking dynasty. The Rothschilds maintained two principal agents in Spain, Ignacio Bauer and Daniel Weisweiller, who funneled information, connections, and profit from Spain and the New World to the center of the Rothschild financial complex. Could the Madrid-based Oliveira have been involved with these two Rothschild agents? A more complete translation should yield further interesting discoveries!

Our letter-writer was Nathaniel de Rothschild, grandson of Rothschild banking founder and family patriarch Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812). Nathaniel was the son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), who had established the family branch in London. Nathaniel was writing to his father's youngest brother James Mayer de Rothschild (1792-1868), who had likewise formed the Paris branch after 1810. Nathaniel had served as an apprentice to his uncle James in the 1830s. "Nat" worked primarily in the Paris office; he eventually married his French cousin and lived in a fashionable Parisian neighborhood. In the 1850s, both Nathaniel and his uncle would establish rival wine vineyards in Bordeaux!

The Rothschild Family, originally of German Jewish ancestry, first emerged as an influential banking house in the eighteenth century. The family's sphere of influence was expanded by establishing satellite banks in London, Paris, Vienna, and Naples. By the early nineteenth century, the Rothschilds were one of the most significant financial concerns in Europe. The family became the creditors of teetering monarchies, bankrupt kingdoms, and fledgling nation states in Europe, the Americas, and Africa.

The Rothschilds were granted a coat of arms and a baronial title in 1822 by King Francis I of Austria. The Rothschild Family arms are comprised of a shield divided into four quadrants featuring arrows, dragons, and lions. The family motto "Concordia / Industria / Integritas" translates into "Peace / Industry / Integrity".
