Pancho Villa RPPC Collection: Feat. Iconic Leader and Grim Scenes of the Mexican Revolution, Fantastic Imagery!
Photograph
Three real photo postcards from the first quarter of the twentieth century, showcasing images of the Mexican Revolution, highlighted by an iconic photo of Francisco "Pancho" Villa on horseback and some darker images of the war. Each photo captures a different, stark reality of the Mexican Revolution, from Villa's leadership to the violence and death that characterized this turbulent time in Mexican history. In fine condition, with notes on verso of image of Villa. The real photo postcards measures 3.5" x 5.5."

The photos depict:
Pancho Villa on Horseback "The Devel Himself": This image shows Pancho Villa, the famed Mexican revolutionary leader, seated confidently on horseback. Dressed in military attire, with a bandolier of ammunition slung across his chest, he epitomizes the guerrilla fighter of the Mexican Revolution. The large sombrero and the bags hanging off the horse suggest he is prepared for travel or battle. The inscription at the bottom, "The Devil 'himself'," suggests his fearsome reputation, while "General Pancho Villa" is marked in the lower right corner, confirming his identity.

"Dead on the Battlefield:" This photo captures the grim aftermath of a battle during the Mexican Revolution, dated 11-18-15 (November 18, 1915). Several bodies lie on the battlefield, some wearing sombreros, indicating their roles as soldiers or revolutionaries. The inscription "Dead on the Battlefield" emphasizes the tragic cost of the war. The photograph's somber tone, with soldiers lying in shallow graves, illustrates the brutal reality of the conflict.

Executed Leaders, The bodies of Gen. Rodriguez and Col. Baca-Valles: The final image depicts the bodies of General Rodriguez and Colonel Baca-Valles, both executed. They are bound, wrapped in cloth, with their bodies displayed for public view. The text at the bottom, "Two bad eggs," reflects a chilling and possibly sarcastic commentary on the brutal execution of these two men, likely seen as enemies during the revolution. The individuals in the background appear indifferent or engaged in discussion, further highlighting the harshness of the revolutionary period.

Pancho Villa (1878–1923) was a key figure in the Mexican Revolution, known for his leadership of the División del Norte and his advocacy for land reform. Initially a bandit, he became a revolutionary general supporting Francisco Madero against Porfirio Díaz. Villa's guerrilla tactics made him a formidable military leader, but his 1916 raid on Columbus, New Mexico, led to U.S. military intervention. Though his influence waned after 1917, Villa remained a symbol of resistance until his assassination in 1923.

The Mexican Revolution (1910–1920) began as a revolt against the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz, who had ruled Mexico for over three decades with a regime that favored economic elites, leaving much of the population impoverished. In 1910, Francisco Madero called for democratic reforms and challenged Díaz, igniting a national uprising. After Díaz was ousted, the revolution evolved into a complex civil war with multiple factions, including Pancho Villa in the north and Emiliano Zapata in the south, each fighting for control and advocating different reforms, particularly land redistribution.

As the revolution progressed, Venustiano Carranza emerged as a key leader, pushing for a constitutional government. The conflict also involved U.S. intervention, especially after Villa's 1916 raid into New Mexico. The war culminated in the Mexican Constitution of 1917, which introduced significant reforms, including labor rights and land redistribution. Though the revolution ended with Álvaro Obregón's rise to the presidency in 1920, the social and political changes it sparked had a lasting impact on Mexico, shaping the country's modern institutions and policies.
