The Pancho Villa Expedition, known as the "Punitive Expedition, U.S. Army" was a military operation conducted by the United States Army against the paramilitary forces of Mexican revolutionary Francisco "Pancho" Villa during the Mexican Revolution of 1910–1920. The expedition was launched in retaliation for Villa's attack on the town of Columbus, New Mexico, with President Wilson's prime objective being the capture of Villa. The mission was unsuccessful, however, the search for Villa ended after only a month due to U.S. troops being denied passage by Constitutionalist forces at the town of Parral. The U.S. mission was then changed to prevent further attacks by Mexican troops and to prepare defenses in the event of a war. Luckily, any outbreak of war was averted through strategic diplomacy.
