Description:

Pan-American Exposition Co. $500 Gold Bond, with 6 International Coffee Cards

1p partially printed, measuring 11” x 14.75”, New York, dated April 10, 1901. A $500 Second Mortgage, 6% Gold Bond of the Pan-American Exposition Company, No. 325. Signed by the company president John G. Milburn and treasurer George L. Williams. With a bronze paper seal at the lower left and one retained $7.50 coupon. The bond has flattened folds, light toning, and some ghosting from where the seal was folded. Accompanied by six Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Company cards, each measuring 3" x 5". Each card has a beautiful collage of images on the front from Jane Jose, Guayaquil, Guatemala, Central America, Paraguay, and Guiana, while the back provides company and historical information. The cards have varying degrees of toning, soiling, and wear. Overall very good.

The Pan-American Exposition was a World's Fair held from May 1 to November 2, 1901, in Buffalo, New York. Displays included performances by Buffalo Bill, Chiquita, Thomas Edison, and Geronimo. Tragically, the fair is best remembered as the location where President William McKinley was assassinated, just six months into his second term on September 6, 1901. McKinley was eager to meet with the public, and despite warnings from his staff, attended the Exposition with little security. While McKinley was shaking hands with people, anarchist Leon Czolgosz pulled out a concealed revolver and shot him twice in the abdomen. On the way to the hospital, it was found that one of the bullets had struck a button and only grazed McKinley, but the other bullet entered his abdomen and was never found. Doctors did their best to treat the president but, while he initially seemed to be making a steady recovery, McKinley died eight days later after an infection set in.
