Palmerston Celebrates the King's Birthday and Orders "Supply of 4,000 Bayonets"
LS
HENRY JOHN TEMPLE, 3RD VISCOUNT PALMERSTON. Two letters signed, "Palmerston", both addressed to Edward William Auriol Drummond-Hay. Dated June 30, 1837 and July 19, 1839, respectively, Foreign Affairs Office, London, England. 3pp on two sheets, 8" x 12.5". Expected folds; uneven toning; light edge wear throughout. Overall, in very good condition.

As Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Viscount Palmerston responds to a complaint from the British Consul at Tangier, Morocco, peeved that a Sardinian warship refused to fire a salute in honor of the birthday of King William IV. Although the king was born on August 21, 1765, the Consul had apparently designated a different day to celebrate his birth. By the time Palmerston responded, King William had died on June 20, 1837, and his niece Queen Victoria had begun her long reign. Two years later, Palmerston agreed to forward 4,000 bayonets to the government of Morocco.

Excerpts include:

-June 30, 1837: "With reference to your dispatch No 27, reporting that a Sardinian Vessel of War, which was lying at Tangier on the day appointed by you to celebrate the Birth-Day of His late Majesty, did not fire any salute in honour of that Day, I have to acquaint you that I have ascertained from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, that it is not usual for a British Ship of War to salute in any Port in honour of the celebration of a Féte of a Third foreign Power, unless a Ship of War of that Third Power be in Port, and salute on the occasion."

-July 19, 1839: "With reference to the request of the Government of Morocco, reported in your dispatch No 8 for a supply of 4000 Bayonets, I have to acquaint you that the same will be immediately sent to Gibraltar, and will be forwarded from thence to you at Tangier, accompanied with a statement of the cost, and other charges thereupon, the amount of which you will recover from the Moorish government."

Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) was born in London to the Irish branch of the Temple family that derived their title from the Peerage of Ireland. When his father died in 1802, he became the 3rd Viscount Palmerston. He later entered Parliament in 1807, and from 1809 to 1828 served as the Secretary at War, responsible for the finances of the army. From 1830 to 1851, he served three terms as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Palmerston's commitment to the balance of power and to British interests allowed Great Britain to have decisive agency in many conflicts.

Edward William Auriol Drummond-Hay (1785-1845) was born in England and graduated from Christ's Church, Oxford, in 1806. Two years later, he took up a commission in the army, where he served in the peninsular war, France, the Low Countries, and was present at the Battle of Waterloo. Drummond-Hay later served as Consul General in Tangier, Morocco, from 1829 to his death in 1845. His son, Sir John Drummond-Hay (1816-1893), succeeded him in the position there for more than forty years, rising to the rank of Minister Resident and then to Envoy Extraordinary.
