Thomas Nast (1840–1902) was a German-born artist who immigrated to New York in 1846. Nast's gifts for illustration and social observation found great success in national mass-circulation news magazines that did not yet have the means to publish photographs. He quickly made a name for himself as a political cartoonist, focusing on such topics as the Civil War, slavery and corruption, and between 1862-1885 he published more than 3,000 drawings, primarily in Harper's Weekly. Nast's early cartoons skewered the corrupt regime of New York's William Marcy "Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall Democratic political machine. He popularized the elephant and donkey as symbols of the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively., and also created the modern representation of Santa Claus as a jolly, rotund man living at the North Pole. Tragically, in 1884, Nast lost his fortune in a Wall Street Ponzi scheme, and left Harper's Weekly in 1887 when he became out of favor with his editor. He later joined the Democratic National Committee as a contract cartoonist but never recovered a national audience or financial position.
