Robert Henry De Niro Sr. (1922-1993) was an American artist known for his use of vibrant color and abstract compositions. He studied under Josef Albers and Hans Hofmann, and his work was regularly exhibited throughout the 1950s along with other early abstract expressionists. Tragically, much of his early work from the 1940s was lost in a studio fire. De Niro married Virginia Admiral in 1942, and the couple gave birth to Robert Anthony De Niro one year later. Soon after his son's birth, De Niro came out as gay and had a relationship with poet Robert Duncan. He died of cancer in 1993, but his art can still be found at numerous museums around the country. The 2014 short documentary "Remembering the Artist" explores De Niro Sr.'s life and his impact on the art world.
