Description:

Pair of McKinley-Hobart Framed 1896 Campaign Broadsides

William McKinley (1843-1901). Garret Augustus Hobart (1844-1899). The 1896 campaign took place during an economic depression known as the Panic of 1893, which began in 1893 and ended in 1897, and deeply affected every sector of the economy. Friend, political ally and future senator, Marcus A. Hanna (1837-1904), used his wealth and business skills to successfully manage McKinley's presidential campaign. Despite Hanna's urging McKinley to go out to the people on a political tour, McKinley would remain at home in Canton, Ohio, to allow the people to come to him. He made himself available to the public every day except Sunday, receiving delegations from the front porch of his home. Hobart's political views were similar to those of McKinley, and the vice-presidential candidate emulated his running mate with his own front porch campaign, though Hobart did spend time at the campaign's New York City office. At the end of an intensely heated contest, McKinley and Hobart won a majority of the popular and electoral vote.
