Description:

Pair of Colonial Documents Signed by Ezekiel Goldthwait & William Greene

A pair of early colonial documents signed by prominent government officials: Ezekiel Goldthwait, Secretary of Massachusetts, and William Greene, Colonial Governor of Rhode Island. The two documents have flattened folds and chipped edges. Varying degrees of uneven toning and spots of soiling. Both have bold signatures.

The first piece is a Document Signed "Ezek. Goldthwait Regr." 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 12.75", Suffolk, dated March 29, 1744. A land deed, recording the transfer of one acre of orchard land in Braintree, purchased by Nehemiah Hayden from Ebenezer Whitmarsh for the amount of £106. Countersigned "Joseph Crosby Just. Peace" and witnessed by James and Dorcas Penniman. With docketing on verso. The red wax seal is still intact.

The second piece is a partially printed Document Signed "W. Greene." 1p, measuring 7.75" x 13", Port of Bristol, dated December 24, 1785. A ship's registration paper for Timothy Boswell, master of the sloop "The Mobe", with a burthen of 60 tons. The ship is recorded as having been built at Warren in 1783. Countersigned by "Jona. Russell", Intendant of Trade.

Ezekiel Goldthwait (1710-1782) was a wealthy businessman in colonial Boston and a prominent figure in the community leading up to the American Revolution. He served as Town Clerk of Boston for 20 years, was Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and Clerk of the Court of General Sessions of the Peace, and was Register of Deeds for Suffolk County for 30 years. William Greene (1695-1758) was governor of the Colony of Rhode Island, and served four separate terms over the span of 11 years, beginning in 1743.
