Pablo Picasso "Pour Roby (L'Age de Soleil)" Original Metal Etching Plate
Etching plate

An original metal etching plate drawn and designed by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), "Pour Roby (L'Age de Soleil)" later published in Robert J. Godet, "L'Age de Soleil" (Paris: Self-published, Printers Roger Lacourière, Georges Leblanc, Atelier E. Durand, 1950). Signed and inscribed by Picasso in the plate as "Picasso pour Roby" along the bottom. The shiny metal etching plate has slightly rounded edges and is housed in a beige sleeve showing what the printed image looks like. Expected surface wear including isolated scuffs recto, and scuffs, thumbprints, and smudges verso. The sleeve shows minor to moderate weathering with isolated tears and adhesive tape. Else near fine. The plate measures 7.25" x 9.375" x .125." Provenance: From a well-known and preeminent New York art collector, who often directly communicated with American and European artists and ateliers in the 1960s and 1970s.

The plate depicts an abstract portrait of the head of Robert J. Godet (1921-1960), Picasso's friend and neighbor. Picasso has captured Godet's earnest expression in a few deft and eloquent lines. Godet was a French editor and writer who was active in the French Resistance. He founded an eponymous publishing house named Éditions Robert J. Godet in 1943. An extensive world-traveler with diverse interests, Godet was notably the only French witness to the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1959. Godet later died at age 39 in a plane crash in Eastern India.
