SB

A Russian translation of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), "Voyages and Returns: Selected Poems" (Moscow: 1964), signed and inscribed by Neruda as: "Pablo / Neruda / Moscú ["Moscow" in Spanish] on the title page. Neruda's bold signature and inscription measure approximately 3.75" x 2.325" alone. N.d. Moscow, Soviet Union. The hardcover book features blue publisher's cloth as issued, with black and gilt-embossed front cover and spine. The copyright page is hand-stamped "69" at the back of the book. Mostly crisp and clean within. Uneven sunning primarily affecting the spine, upper and lower headbands. Else very good to near fine. 5-399pp including Table of Contents. 5.25" x 6.75" x .75."

Pablo Neruda's poetry was informed by his political affiliation with the Chilean Communist Party. When Communism was outlawed in Chile in 1948, Neruda went into self-imposed exile for three years, during which time he traveled to the Soviet Union and other places. His work was praised in the Soviet Union for its anti-capitalist and pro-labor themes. Neruda received the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953, although later during his lifetime he distanced himself from Stalin. Neruda received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature.
