PA Chronicle & Universal Advertiser Re: Boycotting British Goods Due To Townshend Acts

An issue of "The Pennsylvania Chronicle & Universal Advertiser", No. 31 of Volume III, Whole No. 137, containing news of the South Carolina non-importation agreement which restricted the purchase and sale of slaves in the state. Published by William Goddard. 8pp of a bifolium, measuring 9.5" x 12", Philadelphia, dated August 28, 1769. The paper has flattened folds and slightly uneven, chipped edges. With toning, light foxing, and staining throughout. Overall, very good.

In part:
"…Charlestown, S. Carolina, July 6…Articles of agreement, entered into and subscribed by the gentlemen, merchants, traders and inhabitants in general of South Carolina…feeling ourselves burthened, and sensibly affected by many impositions of taxes by late acts of parliament, for the purpose of raising a revenue in America…do therefore hereby solemnly promise & engage…that we will faithfully observe and keep the following resolutions [of which there are eight]…That we will immediately countermand all orders for European and East-India goods not executed, provided the said acts should not be repealed…The we will not purchase, from any masters of vessels, transient persons or non-subscribers, any kind of European or East-India goods, excepting coals and salt…we will not import, buy, or sell, any Negroes that shall be brought into this province from Africa…That if any goods or Negroes shall be consigned or sent to us, contrary to our agreement in the subscription, such goods or Negroes shall be stores or re-shipped from this province…"

This Act was passed in reaction to Great Britain's imposition of taxes on lead, glass, paint, paper, and tea, known as the 1767 Townshend Acts. Parliament had imposed these taxes as a way to fund governance within the American colonies and to pay for the costly French and Indian War. Such taxes were met with widespread protests in America, and by 1769, nearly every colony had agreed to boycott British goods.
