P.G.T. Beauregard ALS Re: "Military Operations" Biography, Mentioning Davis, Johnston, Jordan, and More
ALS

An autograph letter signed by Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard regarding a book being written about his Civil War service and mentioning Jefferson Davis and generals Jordan, Johnston, Cobb, and more. 2pp, front and back, measuring 5" x 8", New Orleans, dated October 14, 1882. Signed "G. T. Beauregard" and addressed to Judge Alfred Roman. Beauregard encloses some papers for the book and discusses other documents which might be used in the publication. With flattened mail folds. Small tears starting at the fold edges. Four small holes at one of the upper folds. Paper loss at the lower right corner, affecting a small amount of text. Faint, scattered soiling and additional soiling along the vertical fold on verso. One of the folds and small separations pass through the "T" in Beauregard's bold signature.

Reading in part:
"The two papers enclosed belong to Book IX, I sent you (or perhaps VIII) yesterday. They refer, it seems, to the same event of the war, but the plan referred to by Genl Jordon (which I think was sent to Genl Cobb, who was on very good terms with Mr. Davis) seems to differ somewhat from the one to Genl Johnston…At the time Genl Jordan wrote me his statement, I wrote to Major Cobb, son of the General, to know if the latter had left a copy of it among his papers - but none could be found. He must have delivered it in person, for I think he was then in Richd. You must judge whether to allude to it at all & insert Jordan's paper in the appendix, or leave it out altogether, making only a passing remark to one having been offered to the Govt thro' Gen' Johnston, but not having a copy of it, it is not considered judicious to say more on the subject than what is given in the one proposed to Genl J…"

Judge Alfred Roman (1824-1892) served as an aide-de-camp and inspector general on General Beauregard's staff during the Civil War. After the war, he became a judge in New Orleans. Beauregard commissioned him to write "The Military Operations of General Beauregard in the War Between the States", which Roman spent four years researching and writing. It was finally published in 1884, with Beauregard as an un-credited co-author.
