Orville Wright, along with older brother Wilbur Wright (1867-1912), are generally credited with flying the first manned and engine-powered airplane near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Interest in commemorating the site of the history-making flight, Kill Devil Hill, began as early as 1926. In March 1927, Congress and President Calvin Coolidge passed legislation to erect the Kill Devil Hill National Memorial, today the site of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, run by the National Park Service. Ground was prepared between 1928-1931, and a Rodgers & Poor-designed memorial was completed in November 1932 in time for the 30th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.
