Description:

Orozco Re: Mexican Renaissance, Picasso, Matisse, Rivera & Pacheco!

2pp of an incomplete and untranslated autograph letter in Spanish by important Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), signed by him as "Clemente" on the last page. N.d., but the "care of" address suggests that the letter fragment may date from ca. 1917-1920 or ca. 1927-1934, two periods when Orozco lived and worked in the United States. Written on both sides of a single leaf of cream paper. Expected wear including paper folds and isolated minor edge chipping, else near fine. 6.875" x 10.875." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

This lot represents the last two pages of an approximately 5pp-long letter which Orozco addressed to an unidentified correspondent. Several key artists' names can be found within the text, including those of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954), and Mexican muralists Diego Rivera (1886-1957) and Maximo Pacheco (1907-1992). Orozco has also written the phrase "Renacimiento Mexicano," or "Mexican Renaissance," referring to the period of the flowering of Mexican art following the Mexican Revolution. In addition, the Spanish words for "periodical," "commission," and "exhibition" found within the text suggest an abundance of artistic content. Orozco appears to be discussing his role in the contemporary art world. This was a topic of great sensitivity for Orozco, since his art was not consistently admired in his home country of Mexico.

Orozco lists his address as "Clemente / c/o Mexican Consulate General / New York N.Y. / U.S.A." This suggests that the letter fragment may date from ca. 1917-1920, when Orozco first fled Mexico for the United States, or ca. 1927-1934, the second longer period of Orozco's American residency, when he completed commissions in California, New Hampshire, and New York on various university campuses.
