Washington, DC, August 28, 1963
Original March on Washington Button from MLK's "I Have a Dream" Speech
Pins/Buttons
Rare original pinback button from the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which was held in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963. Made by Allied Printing of New York, the button measures 2.25" in diameter and features a design of white and black hands shaking in unity. A desirable keepsake from a landmark Civil Right moment, one punctuated by Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Minor scuffing, else fine.

It is worth noting that Martin Luther King Jr. wore an example of this button during his iconic speech which can be seen in the main image of this lot. In October we sold an example for $1,250.

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, held on August 28, 1963, was a pivotal event in the American civil rights movement. Organized by civil rights and labor leaders, it drew over 250,000 participants to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., making it one of the largest political rallies in U.S. history. The march aimed to advocate for economic equality and civil rights for African Americans. It is most famously remembered for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, which eloquently called for an end to racism and for the realization of racial harmony and justice. The march played a crucial role in the eventual passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
