Description:

Coolidge Calvin 1872 - 1933 One of the earliest examples of a Calvin Coolidge letter that we have seen, written only a year after he began his private law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts! Autograph Letter Signed "Calvin Coolidge Jr.", 1 page, 8.5" x 11", on his law office letterhead, Northampton, Massachusetts, August 21, 1899 to Charles H. Dunning concerning the settlement of an estate. Expected folds, light toning and soiling, else fine condition.

An unusually early ALS from the future President: "Mr. Addis is authorized to settle for Eelsan's share in the Estate. I went over the matter with him and we found that a dividend came due at the Cooperation on May 1 of some $30, and I think perhaps we figured the tools rather low at $20. When I figured his share at $138.95 I did not have in mind the May 1 dividend äóî that would probably come in. I think 145 is about what the share would be now with accrued interest..."

After apprenticing with the Northampton law firm of Hammond & Field, the Vermont-born Coolidge was admitted to the bar in 1897, opening his own law office the following year. The same year, he embarked on his political career being elected to the Northampton City Council, an office he held until 1901.

Offered together with an engraving of Coolidge by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
