Description:

French Revolution - On the eve of the French Revolution, and a month before the Tennis Court Oath, one of its most interesting figures, Philippe, Duke of Orleans, signs a document granting a wounded officer in the Chartres-Dragon an "Extended Leave of Absence" who "had the misfortune of having a broken leg".

Manuscript document signed, "LPJ d'Orleans", in French, .5p., 7.75" x 11.75". Paris, France, May 6, 1789. Page is folded in half - lower half blank except for "Chartres Dragons / mai" in manuscript in the lower left hand corner. Fine condition.

Always a strong believer in the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu, Louis Philippe Joseph d'Orleans was very vocal about his anti-royalist sentiments during the Assembly of the Notables in 1787, despite being the cousin of King Louis XVI. Just a month after this document was signed by Philippe, the Third Estate broke from the Estates-General and formed the National Assembly when they signed the famous Tennis Court Oath on June 20. Ever the egalitarian, Philippe was the first to break from the Estates-General and join the National Assembly. In the end, however, despite changing his name to Philippe ÌägalitÌ©, he was guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1793.

While receiving this certificate, Andr̩ Woechter was a part of the regiment known as the 14e (Quatorzi̬me) Regiment de Dragons, also known as Chartres Dragons until 1791. Formed on March 3, 1672, the regiment disbanded after World War I.
