Oliver Wolcott Jr signs a Revolutionary War Order to pay Capt. Birdsey for expenses incurred bringing his part of 4000 state militia


Manuscript Document Signed: "Oliv Wolcott Jr Audr" across first page, 2pp, front and verso. Invoice dated Nov. 17, 1779, State of Connecticut. To Joseph Birdsey. In full: "By Order of Saml Whiting Esqr. Co. Commandr. For going Express from Stratford to Woodbury, to Co. Mosely 26 miles from thence to Co. Canfield at New Milford 14 Miles and from thence to Co. Beardslee at New Fairfield 12 miles - With his Excellencys Orders to bring forward that part of the 4000 Militia which was Ordered to Rendivous (sic) at Stratford, under Command of General Ward. The Jorney (sic) 52 Miles @ 5/ pr mile... £13.0.0. For pocket Expenses in performing the same... 6.6.0. £19.6.0"


Beneath this are two Manuscript Documents Signed: "John Brooks" as Justice of the Peace on one and Brooks and another Justice on the other, each dated Stratford, Dec. 12, 1779. To John Lawrence Esqr Treasurer of the state. In part: "Personally Appeared Capt. Joseph Birdsey and made Solemn Oath that the Service and Expense Contained in the Above Account was by him performed... ."</> and "... we the Subscribing Authority have duly and Carefully Examined the Articles of Charge Contained in the Above Account, and do Find the same to be Equitable and Justly done, and do therefore Order payment, thereon Accordingly." The entire document is in the hand of John Brooks. On verso is a Manuscript Document Signed: "Saml Whiting Col/Commandant of the 4th Brig/militia of this State." In full: "Stratfrd November 29th 1779. These may Certify that I directed and Imployed (sic) Capt Joseph Birdsey, to perform the within mentioned Service at the public Expence which Service he faithfully performed." Beneath which is a Manuscript Receipt Signed: "Joseph Birdsey." In full: "Recd of John Lawrence Esqr State Treasr by the hands of John Benjamin Collector of the Town of Stratford the within Bill & Order in full pr me." Oliver Wolcott, Jr. has boldly signed at the lower right as Auditor. Wolcott, son and namesake of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was only 19 when he signed this document.
