Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. is best known as an American poet, novelist, and essayist, but he was also a doctor, medical reformer, trained lawyer, and inventor of the stereoscope. Holmes's poem "Old Ironsides" (1830) rallied support for the conservation of the Revolutionary War era warship U.S.S. Constitution and first made the writer famous. His Breakfast-Table series, a collection of essays set at a New England boarding house and published in book form in 1858, charmed his readers. Holmes befriended other literary heavyweights like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He died in his sleep in October 1894, less than two years after signing this card.

Novelist and short story writer Ruth McEnery Stuart signed a cream colored stock card verso as "Yours Very Truly Ruth McEnery Stuart". Stuart was known for her portrayals of local color in the American South.
