Description:

Ellsworth Oliver 1745 - 1807 Oliver Ellsworth signed promissory note dated Dec. 25, 1776

Single page manuscripted signed document on laid paper, 9.75" x 3.25". Maintaining strong contrast with clean signatures, dated "Dec 25 th, 1776", and signed by "Oliver Ellsworth as "O Ellsworth". Crisp paper, still maintaining rigidity. Expected folds, else fine. Docketed to verso.

A great piece with a scarce 1776 date, less than 3 months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A note to give money to Freeman Kilborne for Services Expenses in the amount of "two pounds + three pence + Charge the State". Signed by Oliver Ellsworth, one of Connecticut's first two senators.

Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony, especially those which balked at levying taxes. In order to meet immediate needs, such as wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionists, foreign loans, and taxes and gifts from abroad .Connecticut issued promissory notes such as this. Issuing paper money was only a temporary solution, and worthless without specie or gold and silver backing. The U. S. would establish its standard monetary system in 1791.
