Description:

Ellsworth Oliver

Connecticut Revolutionary War Dated Accounting Document Signed by Oliver Ellsworth

A Revolutionary War dated accounting ledger itemizing Connecticut state expenditures on copying and disseminating important documents, from August-October 1777. Not only does this provide a fascinating glimpse into financing the American Revolution, but also the publicizing and public relations aspects of it. The success of the war effort depended as much on information as it did money, supplies, or forces.

The log relates to miscellaneous expenses relating to the distribution of copies of Acts, Commissions, and other public resolutions, including the recent Declaration of Independence. It was signed by Connecticut politician Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) as "O. Ellsworth Just. Pais." at the conclusion. Also signed by officials Benjamin Payne and Hezekiah Wyllys on behalf of longtime Connecticut Secretary George Wyllys. The 7pp unbound manuscript consists of two sets of adjoining sheets. Docketed on the last page. Expected paper folds and chipped edges, else near fine. 6.25" x 7.75".
