Pay voucher No. 2644 dated December 25, 1775 instructed Connecticut Treasurer Jonathan Lawrence to reimburse a soldier's travel expenses. James Alcott, a soldier of "Colo: Webbs Regt" or the 7th Connecticut Regiment, had spent 21 shillings marching between "Stanford" or Stamford, Connecticut, and Colonel Charles Webb's camp in the winter of 1775.

"Sir

Pay James Alcott by the hand of White Griswold Twenty one Shilling for Expence of Marching from Stanford to Camp / being a Soldier in Colo: Webbs Regt: - as P. ? & charge the Colony - ."

Oliver Ellsworth, a Yale and Princeton educated lawyer, was very involved in revolutionary politics, and helped to draft the U.S. Constitution. He was appointed by Washington to serve as the 3rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he filled between 1796-1800.

Jonathan Lawrence served as treasurer before, during, and after the American Revolution, when Connecticut was first a colony and then a state.

The man who collected 21 shillings on behalf of James Alcott, White Griswold (1727-1777), was a soldier in Captain Theophilus Munson's Company, 8th Connecticut Regiment, Connecticut Line. Griswold participated in the Battle of Quebec, and was captured following the Battle of Germantown (1777). He died on a British prison ship in December 1777.

Colonel Charles Webb's Regiment was designated the 39th Regiment of Foot in the summer of 1775. Later incorporated into the Connecticut Line, it was active up until 1781.
