Ellsworth Oliver 1745 - 1807 Six weeks after independence, future Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth orders payment to Dr. Joshua Elderkin "to purchase Tents & Cloathing for the Continental Northern Department..."

Autograph Document Signed "O Ellsworth" also signed "T Seymour" as Members of the Committee of the Pay Table, 1p, 8.25" x 6.5". Hartford, August 16, 1776. To John Lawrence, Treasurer of the State of Connecticut. Seymour signature light. On watermarked laid paper. Fine condition.

In full, "Pay Doct. Joshua Elderkin, Four Hundred Pounds to purchase Tents & Cloathing for the Continental Northern Department - out of the Mony lodged by Mr Sherman for that Purpose, if any such otherwise out of the proper Treasury of this State - & charge the State - pr hand of Mr Edmond Badger. Hartford Augt 16th 1776 - ë£400."

Thomas Seymour (1734-1829) was the first Mayor of Hartford (1774-1812) when he signed this document. Docketed by Ellsworth on verso: "Order - / Doct Josha Ekderkin / ë£400". Receipt on verso signed "Edmd Badger." "Audited Sepr 1, 1777 / J Treadwell" by John Treadwell (1745-1823) who later served as Governor of Connecticut (1809-1811). Edmond Badger was a builder in Windham, Connecticut.

Dr. Joshua Elderkin (1720-1801), an ordained pastor, practiced medicine in Windham, Connecticut. A merchant before the Revolution, in July 1776, Elderkin was asked to buy tow cloth for tents for the Continental Army. He was also appointed with others to procure supplies and refreshments for the soldiers. His name is frequently mentioned in the minutes of the Assembly and Council of Safety as furnishing supplies and providing and contracting for various articles necessary for the Army.
