Cromwell Oliver 1599 - 1658 Oliver Cromwell's Proclamation of the Peace (1st Treaty of Westminster) made between the Commonwealth and the United Provinces of the Netherlands



14.25" x 10.75" broadside, London, 1654. Paper has some discoloration to edges. Repairs made to document applied verso. Seal at top of document shows the cross and harp used during this time period to represent the Commonwealth of England. Decorative 'H' surrounded by leaves and vines starts the proclamation.

A printed proclamation of the peace made between the Commonwealth of England and the Netherlands given at White Hall on April 26, 1654 by Oliver Cromwell. This proclamation announced the end of the First Anglo-Dutch War which spanned from 1652-1654. The Treaty of Westminster ended the war. It was possibly one of the first treaties to use international arbitration to resolve their differences. Oliver Cromwell at this time served as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The proclamation reads in part:

"His highness the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, considering how necessary it is, not only to preserve peace and quiet at home, but, as far as in him lyes, to live in Amity and Friendship with his Neighbors, hath be the blessing of God...That all Enmity, hostility, Discord and War between the said Common=wealths, their people and Subjects, shall cease, and all Injuries and wrongs whatsoever done since the 18/28 of May one thousand six hundred fifty two, shall cease and be forgotten, except such depredations as shall be committed by either side...And that the people and Inhabitants of each party respectibely, of what condition or quality...shall treat each other with Love and Friendship, and may freely and securely come into and pass through each others Countries, Towns, Villages...

Whereof all persons, whatsoever in these Nations of England, Scotland and Ireland, are to take notice and conform themselves accordingly.
