ALS, 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", dated July 14, 1911, Bliss, OK. A letter from notable old west artist Emil W. Lenders, written on decorative stationary depicting sharpshooter Lillian Smith, alias "Princess Winona", regarding the purchase of lumber. The page is headlined "Princess Winona's Western Show/ Featuring Princess Winona/ The World's Greatest Horseback Rifle Shot", with borders that feature printed etchings by Edward Borein (1872-1945), who became famous for his paintings of Spanish Colonial California. Mounted to a larger piece of canvas to the overall size of 9.5" x 13". Exhibits light toning throughout, with some areas of ink fading and creasing at corners. Very good, with interesting connections to popular Wild West shows.

"Friend Joe: Please find enclosed estimate of lumber necessary to put this place in shape for next season's business. _ told me that you intended to get a car load of lumber and that you want me to send in my estimates.
Hoping this finds you well. I try to remain, with kindest regards, yours very affectionately
E. W. Lenders"

Lillian Frances Smith (1871-1930) was an American trick shooter and trick rider who joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1886 at the age of fourteen. It was during this time that she first met Annie Oakley, who was eleven years her senior. As Smith's popularity at the show increased, so did her rivalry with Oakley, which stemmed partially from the former's own growing confidence. Despite tensions, the two would often be forced to travel together during tours, and even met Queen Victoria while performing in Great Britain. Smith would eventually leave Buffalo Bill's show in 1889, but would continue to work in showbusiness throughout the rest of the early twentieth century. It was not until 1907, under the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Show, that she would adopt the persona of Winona, an fictional Sioux princess.
