Official Rare and Gorgeous Report of Queen Victoria's Coronation

Victoria became Queen of the British Empire on June 20, 1837, at the age of 18, on the death of her uncle, William IV. The coronation took place a year later at Westminster Abbey, on June 28, 1838.

Planning began in March 1838, and the Cabinet announced that the coronation would be at the end of the parliamentary session in June. Newly constructed railways brought in some 400,000 visitors for the processions related to the coronation. Public celebrations included a balloon ascent and a firework display.

[QUEEN VICTORIA.] Supplement to the London Gazette of Tuesday the 3d of July, July 4, 1838. Printed Document. 20 pp., 7.75" x 12". Expected folds; a few edge tears; very good. Ex-Malcolm Forbes and Sotheby's July 15, 1993. We cannot locate another example. A different Gazette printing last appears at auction over 100 years ago.

This printed report includes an account of the "Coronation of Her Most Sacred Majesty Queen Victoria" with detailed lists of the members of the procession. Among the list of "Foreign Ambassadors and Ministers Extraordinary" is "Ahmed Fettij, Ambassador Extraordinary from the Sultan," but the name has been crossed out in ink in this copy.

It also includes details of the ceremony, including "The Recognition," "The First Offering," "The Litany," "The Communion Service," "The Sermon," "The Oath," "The Anointing," various items offered to the Queen, "The Benediction and Te Deum," "The Inthronization," "The Homage," "The Holy Sacrament," and "Second Offering."

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 1837 until her death in January 1901. Her reign gave its name to the Victorian Era, and in 1876, the British Parliament gave her the additional title of Empress of India. She married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1819-1861) in 1840, and they had nine children, including her successor, Edward VII (1841-1910). Her husband's death plunged her into deep mourning, and she avoided public appearances for many years, leading to a growth of republicanism. During the latter years of her reign, however, her popularity resurged.
