Description:

Odilon Redon
Listrac, Gironde, France, n.d.
Odilon Redon 2x Signed ALS: "a marvelous season of heat and color"
ALS

A 1p autograph letter in French signed by Symbolist artist Bertrand Redon (more commonly known as Odilon Redon) (1840-1916), signed by him as "Odilon Redon" at lower right. Redon has also written out his wife's name as "Madame Redon" on the third line of the first paragraph, thus constituting a partial second signature as "Redon." N.d. Listrac, Gironde, France. Inscribed on laid watermarked paper, possibly once bifold. Lightly toned, and with a central horizontal transmittal fold. Else near fine. 4.375" x 7."

Odilon Redon wrote this thank-you note to an unidentified correspondent; from context, someone named Monsieur May. At the time of the letter-writing, Redon was in the Listrac-Médoc region, an area of southwestern France where Redon had lived as a child, and where his uncle managed a wine-growing estate at Peyrelebade. Redon rejoices that the time away has also benefitted the correspondent's son - perhaps someone who was an apprentice or artist-in-training? He remarks with an artist's eye his appreciation for the superior color and heat of the summer season.

Translated in full, with punctuation silently added for clarity:

"Listrac / gironde

Monsieur,

A thousand thanks: the parcels have reached me. We are enchanted, Madame Redon and I, to be able to prolong, by 15 days, a respite that your boy has very much profited from also, and by a marvelous season of heat and color.

Without a final goodbye, dear Monsieur, present to Madame May my homages, and believe in my best sentiments, I beg you.

Odilon Redon."
