NY Governor William Burnet Signed Military Appointment for T. Gaasbeek

1p, measuring 12.5" x 7.75", Fort George, New York, dated December 6, 1726. A military commission signed "W Burnet" as Captain General and Governor in Chief of the Provinces of New York and Territories, appointing Thomas Van Gaasbeek "Cornet of that troop of Militia for the County of Ulster whereof Johannes Ten Brook Esq. is Captain…" Appointed by authority of His Majesty of Great Britain. The appointment has flattened folds, with chipping and separations at the folds and edges. Silking on verso. Toning, foxing, and dampstaining throughout. Bumped and creased corners. Boldly signed by Burnet and countersigned by "W.S. Bobin D Secry."

William Burnet (1688-1729) was a British colonial administrator who served as governor of New York and New Jersey (1720-1728) and Massachusetts and New Hampshire (1728-1729). He was well-educated, having been tutored by Sir Isaac Newton, and his godfather, William of Orange, became King of England not long after his birth. During his tenure in New York, Burnet attempted to end the fur trade between Albany and Montreal in order to bolster trade with Native Americans, but his efforts were unsuccessful.

Thomas Gaasbeek (1707-1755) was the eldest son of Abraham Gaasbeek Chambers and Sara Bayard. Cornet was originally the lowest grade of commissioned officer in a British cavalry troop and is the modern equivalent of a second lieutenant. Gaasbeek married Margaret Elmendorf in 1732 and the couple had six children. He died in 1752 and was buried in the Foxhall family vault.
