The Nuremberg Trials were a series of military tribunals held by the victorious Allied powers in the aftermath of World War II to prosecute Nazi leaders for plotting and carrying out invasions of several countries across Europe and committing atrocities against their citizens. From November 1945 to October 1946, the International Military Tribunal (IMT) tried twenty-two of the most important surviving leaders of Nazi Germany in the political, military, and economic spheres, as well as six German organizations. The purpose of the trial was not only to try the defendants, but also to assemble irrefutable evidence of Nazi war crimes. Indeed, each of the defendants would be charged with crimes against peace, with twelve convicted and sentenced to death. These included Goering, Ribbentrop, Keitel, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Frank, Frick, Streicher, Sauckel, Jodl, Seyss-Inquart, and Bormann (in absentia).

Born in Kanas in 1915, Charles W. Alexander was drafted into the military in 1943 where he served as the photographer for the commander of the 5th Army. He was discharged in 1945 in order to take a position as a photographer at the Nuremberg trials. Alexander later published two photographic histories of the trials including, 'Justice at Nuremberg' (1946).
