Notarized copy of a loan to professor Telemachus T. Timayenis who had taught the children of John D. Rockefeller. In 1888, Timayenis wrote the Anti-Semitic “The Original Mr. Jacobs” stating that Rockefeller conforms to his Jewish stereotype and that “the spirit of the Standard Oil Company is simply the spirit of the monopoly, of cruelty, of annihilation of all competitors, a spirit in fact such as manifests itself in the scandalous enterprises of the Jews … ”

Autograph Document Signed “Edward Myers 1p, 7.75” x 9.75”. New York, July 28, 1885. Red Notary Seal affixed at lower left. Expertly mended on verso at folds. Attached by three brass prong fasteners to a Manuscript Document, 2p, 8” x 10”, separate sheets. Fine condition.



In part, “To all whom these presents shall come I, Edward Myers Notary Public, duly commissioned and sworn … do hereby certify that the paper writing hereunto annexed, purporting to be a copy of an agreement made by T.T. Timayenis bearing date the 28th day of August 1884 is a true and correct copy … ”



Headed “Copy.” In full, “Whereas John D. Rockefeller has this day day loaned unto T.T. Timayenis the sum of Three Thousand Five Hundred (#3500.00) Dollars, now this witnessseth, that the said T.T. Timayenis for himself his heirs, administrators and assigns covenants and agrees to pay to the party first mentioned the said sum upon demand; and to pay interest on said sum at the rate of six per cent per annum, in semi annual payments until the said principal sum is paid. He further covenants and agrees to deliver unto the said John D. Rockefeller, as collateral security for said sum, his work, now in the hands of the publishers entitled ‘Greece in the Times of Homer’ the said work and all its avails to remain in the hands of said John D. Rockefeller and to be security for said sum with all the interest due thereon until full payment thereo f… ”



Telemachus T. Timayenis (1853-1918) was a Greek-American professor, novelist, and playwright. He was a professor of classical Greek at the New York Hellenic Institute and the Chautauqua School of Languages in 1879 and taught Rockefeller’s children. Seven years later, he became the director of the New York School of Languages. In 1888, Timayenis left his academic work and established Minerva Publishing Company in New York, the first company in American to publish books critical of Jews. Timayenis authored three book on the Jews: “The Original Mr. Jacobs: A Startling Exposé,” “?The American Jew: An Expose of His Career?,” and “Judas Iscariot: An Old Type in a New Form.” In “The American Jew,” Timayenis provided several illustrations showing physical characteristics on how one might identify a Jew.



Jonathan D. Sarna writes in “The ‘Mythical Jew’ and the ‘Jew Next Door’” a chapter of “Anti-Semitism in American History” edited by David A. Gerber (Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 1986), that in “The Original Mr. Jacobs,” Timayenis “calls non-Jews who conform to his Jewish stereotype ‘Jews,’ evidence to the contrary notwithstanding: ‘Has ever a man of observation asked himself the question: “Is there any Jewish blood in the veins of John D. Rockefeller?” We do not hesitate to affirm from an intimate knowledge of the man, that if Rockefeller is not actually a Jew, he has many Jewish traits … The spirit of the Standard Oil Company is simply the spirit of the monopoly, of cruelty, of annihilation of all competitors, a spirit in fact such as manifests itself in the scandalous enterprises of the Jews … ”
