Notable Naval Persons Group: Bancroft, Byrd, and Rickover

A group of three letters from naval notables George Bancroft (1800-1891), Richard E. Byrd Jr. (1888-1957), and Hyman G. Rickover (1900-1986), dating from 1844 to 1964. Includes the following:

George Bancroft Autograph Letter Signed "G Bancroft." 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.875" x 9.75", Boston, dated November 20, 1844. Addressed to Hon. John Fairfield and marked "Private and Confidential". Bancroft asks Fairfield his opinion on upcoming appointments under President Polk, specifically that of Attorney General. Bancroft established the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1845. With a black wax seal on verso. Flattened folds, spots of soiling, and light toning. Boldly signed.

Richard E. Byrd Jr. Typed Letter Signed "Richard E Byrd." 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 7" x 9.75", Boston, dated November 1938. Addressed to Margaret McBride at the Columbia Broadcasting System Inc. Byrd states that his publishers are anxious to hear about his recent broadcast, writing: "…Would you mind giving them your impression of it. Have you had any response from our radio conversation?..." The internal page of the letter has a complete list of committee members of the Byrd Association. Byrd was an aviator and polar explorer, famous for discovering Mount Sidley in Antarctica. Flattened folds, with light soiling and toning. Boldly signed.

Hyman G. Rickover Typed Letter Signed "H.G. Rickover." 2pp, measuring 8" x 10.5", New York, dated November 16, 1964. Addressed to Senator Thomas H. Kuchel and typed on U.S.S. Nathanael Greene letterhead. Rickover reports on the successful first sea trials of the U.S.S. Nathanael Greene, the twenty-ninth Polaris nuclear submarine, and provides an extensive history of Revolutionary general Greene's life and military history. Rickover was an Admiral in the U.S. Navy and came to be known as the "Father of the Nuclear Navy" after developing and overseeing operations of naval nuclear propulsion for three decades. Flattened folds, with light soiling and toning. Boldly signed.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
