Description:

Northwest Style Native American Totem Pole, 10 Feet Tall & 360 Degree Carved

An original vintage totem pole, carved in a 360-degree round, with all sides being highly ornate, likely designed as a free-standing piece. Natural wood patina, rich vibrant colors, 124” tall, 48” at widest, small crack line along underside of bird wing. We have seen vintage Totem poles of this size listed for $55,000, carved on only one side. Totem has fully extended winged figure, likely a Thunderbird but much more graceful than any of the others we've seen. Base shows exposed unpainted wood. Front bearing ornately carved figures topped with an amazingly graceful figurative bird with its neck arched, facing toward the sky. Rear of the pole is also fully decorated with carved and painted figures.  Please see images for additional details of the figures, but this piece is best viewed in person at our offices. Originates from a Fairfield County Collection of an elderly gentleman who claims it was purchased by his mother many, many years ago and was coveted by the whole family.

Native American Totem Poles are sculpted from large trees by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America and Canada, and painted with “totems”, symbols or figures of animals or plants that represent clans or families. The totem is thought to interact with a kin group or individual, and is a sign of wealth and affluence. Generally found near the dwellings of chiefs, a totem pole in front of a Native American's home would show the ancestry and the social rank of the family. The unique colors used on totems have as much meaning as the figures carved on them, with paint made of natural ingredients mixed with oil from salmon eggs. White represents sky, heaven, purity; red represents blood, war, valor; blue represents waters, skies, sincerity; yellow represents sun, light, happiness; green represents trees, mountains; purple represents distant mountains, black represents power. We have expertise in many areas but Native American Art is not one of them. We are therefore unable to say who made this or when it was made and suggest an in-person inspection. We can guarantee that it is absolutely stunning!
