North Carolina Revolutionary War Veteran Sells Slave

With this bill of sale, Captain Lewis Bledsoe sold a slave named Dudley to Isaac Dawson in Wake County, North Carolina. In 1812, the county court had appointed Bledsoe's brother John Bledsoe (ca. 1750-1829) as guardian of Isaac Dawson as an orphan. In 1818, when Isaac Dawson was of age, he receipted John Bledsoe for his guardianship, and Lewis Bledsoe served as a witness. In this document, John Bledsoe served as a witness, when his brother sold Dawson a slave.

Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Bledsoe of the county of Wake and state of north Carolina have bargained and sold to Isaac Dawson a negro boy about fifteen years old by the name of Dudley for the sum of four hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the said Isaac Dawson the rights whereof for the sum I bind myself and my heirs to warrant and defend forever sold and delivered in presents of [us?] the 13 of May 1825.

Lewis Bledsoe (1756-1833) was born in North Carolina and enlisted in the Revolutionary War as a private. He saw service in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. He participated in the Battle of Camden in August 1780. He rose through the ranks until he was made captain of a horse company. He married Frances Moore (b. 1766) in 1780, and they had eleven children between 1781 and 1806. He obtained a land grant in Wake County, North Carolina, in 1785. In 1810, he moved to Granville County, North Carolina.

Isaac Dawson (1797-1869) was born in Wake County, North Carolina. In 1823, he married Catherine J. Warren (1803-1885), who divorced him. He later married Permelia Jane Lowery (1810-1870).
