Richard Caswell (1729-1789) was the first Governor of the State of North Carolina (1776-1780, 1785-1787). Commissioned Major General, Caswell commanded N.C. troops in 1780 and 1781. Elected a Delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, he did not attend. Merchant and planter Lewis DeRosset (1724-1786) was a Councillor of the Province until the Revolution. A Tory, he returned to England after the evacuation of Charleston in 1782. John Harvey (1724-1775) served five times as Speaker of the North Carolina Colonial Assembly, and was moderator (president) of the First and Second North Carolina Provincial Congresses, 1774-1775. Scottish-born merchant John Rutherford (1724-1782), a member of the Council of North Carolina (1752-1757, 1761-1775), pledged his allegiance to the Crown and fled to Scotland when Cornwallis withdrew his troops, sacrificing his property and possessions to the Patriots.
