Norman Rockwell ANS and Photo Book from Christmas Trip to Bethlehem

A short note signed by Norman Rockwell, accompanied by a small picture book gifted by the Rockwells to a friend. The note is 1p, measuring 4" x 6", Jerusalem, dated February 24, 1970. Signed "N.R." and addressed to Nellie. The note is accompanied by a vintage mini pocketbook entitled "Little Folder Series: Bethlehem" inscribed (not in his hand) "Nellie B. Srodulski gift from Mr. & Mrs. Norman Rockwell Feb 24, 1970." With 13 views of the city. The note has a flattened fold, bumped corners, and a small tear at the fold. Boldly signed by Rockwell. The book has bumped edges and corners, with toning and light wear throughout. One of the photographs has been torn at the strip fold but is repaired with tape. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information.

The note reads "This candle is from the shrine of Mary, mother of Christ, in the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem."

In early December 1969, Norman Rockwell traveled to Bethlehem to paint a Christmas scene for "Look" magazine. Accompanied by his wife Molly and his photographer Brad Herzog, he flew into Jerusalem and gathered impressions for his painting from the roof of a Bethlehem hotel. He was particularly impressed by the "sumptuous" presentation of the high priests, cardinals, and bishops as they proceeded to the Basilica. "Look" also wished for Rockwell to create portraits of Prime Minister Golda Meir, Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek, and General Moshe Dayan during his five-day stay in Jerusalem. Rockwell met with Meir and Kollek, but Dayan refused to meet with him. Rockwell was later able to do a portrait of Mayor Kollek based on photos taken during the visit, but "Look" ultimately scrapped the project and never published the portrait.
