Description:

Shortly before his self-imposed exile from Germany, Albert Einstein offers his support for an international language to promote international peace and understanding

ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955) Typed Document Signed, "A. Einstein," 1 page, 8.25" x 11.25", Berlin, December 18, 1929, in German, offering his support for the propagation of an international language (most likely Esperanto). File holes at left margin, light soiling toward top margin, else fine.

(" Federation for the introduction of an international auxiliary language to promote understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples." (" I am willing to join the federation for the introduction of an international auxiliary language to promote understanding, peace, and cooperation among nations." )

Esperanto, a language that was created by L.L. Zamenhof, a Polish Jew in the 1870s and 1880s, was viewed with great suspicion by Hitler and the Nazis , who viewed the international nature of the language, together with its Jewish inventor, with predictable hostility. Einstein, an ardent anti-nationalist and supporter of international cooperation, took a favorable view of such efforts.
