Typed Letter Signed "Richard Nixon" as President, 1p, 6.75" x 8.75". On pale green White House stationery, with blind embossed presidential seal at top center, Washington, January 17, 1974. Accompanied by original White House envelope. To Mrs. James S. Copley, La Jolla, California. Fine condition.

In full, "Dear Helen: How thoughtful of you to remember Pat and me at Christmas. We were most pleased to receive the special edition copy of Our Historic Desert, and you may be sure it will be placed alongside the other Copley books on our shelves. With our warm good wishes to you for peace and contentment in the year ahead."

A conservative Republican, James S. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the "San Diego Union," "The San Diego Union-Tribune," and the "San Diego Evening Tribune" from 1947 (the year Nixon entered Congress) until he died of cancer on October 6, 1973, at the age of 57. His editorials always supported Nixon. Copley was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications. Helen Copley (1922-2004) succeeded her husband as head of the Union Tribune Publishing Company in San Diego. She was also Chairman and CEO of The Copley Press, a publisher and newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications.

A numbered Special Edition, similar to the one sent to the Nixons, is present, including a "Seasons / Greetings / Helen / Copley" 4" x 7" card. "Our Historic Desert: the Story of the Anza-Borrego Desert, The Largest State Park in the United States of America" by Diana E. Lindsay, edited by Richard F. Pourade. Published in La Jolla, California, by Copley Books. Special Edition with dust jacket, 144p, 8.5" x 11.25". Signature page soiled at top edge. Numbered 443, December 1973 signed "Richard F. Pourade."
