Description:

Nicholas Schuyler Survey of Two "Bouweries" in New York, 1714

A New York survey document produced by Nicholas Schuyler for a division between two lots or "bouweries." 1p, measuring 12" x 15", Albany, New York, dated May 17, 1714. The document includes a written description of the division between lots 3 and 4 in "Schonaghtady" (present-day Schenectady), along with a basic survey sketch. Reading in part: "In the county of Albany in the Provence of New York…Surveyed by Mr. Nicholas Schuyler at the request of Rijer Schmerhorn and Claess Van Patten…" With flattened folds and small separations - some of which have been repaired with archival tape. Edge chipping and creasing. Uneven toning and foxing throughout. Boldly signed.

Nicholas Schuyler (1691-1748) was the only surviving son of Philip and Elizabeth de Meyer Schuyler. The Schuylers were a prominent family in New York History, with Scion Peter Schuyler serving as its first Mayor. Nicholas settled in Schenectady after his marriage and became a surveyor. In 1727, he was selected to represent his hometown in the provincial Assembly. Schuyler was later employed as an engineer and helped build Fort Clinton at Old Saratoga.

The Bouweries (Dutch for "farm") were initially purchased by the Dutch West India Company as part of New Amsterdam, which stretched from New England to Virginia. Each varied in size from about 50-200 acres.
