Manuscript Letter Signed "Ben. West," 1 page, 7" x 8.75". Charlestown [New Hampshire], May 7, 1810. With inlaid integral address leaf addressed to Hon. Jonathan H. Hubbard, Windsor [Vermont] Fine condition.


In full, "When a man has been absent from his friends during a long winter, and doing sincere penance; on his return to receive as a first salutation form one of his best friends a discerning letter, seems hardly reconcilable with friendship or even politeness. But necessity obliges me to ask the favor of you some time within ten days to send me one hundred dollars or any less sum which you can conveniently part with _ÑÓ Notwithstanding the above I hope you always believe me your sincere friend Ben. West"

Jonathan Hatch Hubbard (1768-1849) represented Vermont as a Federalist in Congress from 1809-1811. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1810, the year West wrote him the letter here offered, Hubbard later served as a Judge of the Vermont Supreme Court (1813-1815).
