Description:

New York Supreme Court Legal Documents, Dating from 1838-1896

A group of approximately 100 total documents from the New York Supreme Court, dating from 1838-1896. The group relates to numerous legal issues including the raising of a damn, handling of debts, land disputes, accusations of trespass, evictions, sworn statements, notices of retainer, court summons, will executions, etc. Highlights below:

February 17, 1838: Lorenzo Stowell & Ward P. Lewis vs. Thaddeus Keeler II. The document provides testimony in a case of a $700 debt: "Lorenzo Stowell and Ward P. Lewis Defendants in this suit by Edwin Dodge their Attorney come and defend the wrong & injury when &c., and say that they did not undertake and promise in manner and form as the said plaintiff hath above thereof in declaring complained against them and of this they the said defendants put themselves upon the county…"

July 9, 1839: A Writ of Nuisance, "Henry H. Haile has complained to us that Joel Keyes unjustly has raised a certain dam in the town of Gouverneur in your County to the nuisance of the freehold of the said Henry H. Haile; we do therefore command you that you summon the said Joel Keyes, that he be before our Justices…to answer the said Henry H. Haile…" The document was sent to L. Moody, Sheriff of Lawrence County, New York, and J. Ward, Deputy Sheriff.

The group of documents have been organized and nicely displayed in a three-ring binder. Most have flattened folds, with varying degrees of toning, foxing, soiling, and ink stains. Overall a very good collection of legal papers that are worth an in-depth perusal.
