Nelson Mandela Signed 1994 South African General Elections Ballot Paper
DS
A 1994 South African General Elections unused blank ballot paper, serial number 2220055, boldly signed by Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), future 1st President of South Africa, as "N Mandela" in the top left corner. N.d., n.p. This type of ballot paper was issued to voters in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, as indicated by the highlighted map of South Africa at the top, and the prefix "Natal" located at lower left; Mandela himself had voted with a similar ballot paper at Ohlange High School in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The ballot paper gives instructions in six languages at top, and lists a total of eleven candidates below; Nelson Mandela, president of the African National Congress, can be found seven rows down. The ballot paper features the last-minute addition of the sticker at bottom, representing Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, candidate for the Inkatha Freedom Party, who had decided to run just days before the election and after the ballots were already printed. A set of staple holes can be found along the left edge past the untorn perforation. Expected wear including a few gentle wrinkles, else near fine. 7.875" x 12."

Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress won the April 26-29, 1994 general elections by a margin of 62% after over 19 million votes were cast. The historic 1994 election was the first to allow universal suffrage; previously, only Whites were enfranchised. The elections headlined several anti-apartheid political parties that had formerly been banned, and several newly formed political parties.
