Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. Many remember the thrilling black and white footage of Armstrong's July 20, 1969 moon walk, yet that was just the triumphant culmination of the Apollo XI space mission which lasted over eight days. The 3-person crew consisted of Commander Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins (1930-2021), and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (born 1930). While on the moon, the astronauts took photographs; placed a TV camera, American flag, and plaque on the surface; collected geological samples; set up seismic and laser experiments; and even received a celebratory phone call from President Nixon.

Neil Armstrong made space and its study his life's work, gaining applied and abstract experience as a Navy aviator, independent test pilot, NASA astronaut, and university professor. Armstrong retired from the space program shortly after his famous 1969 Apollo XI moon walk, and taught at the University of Cincinnati for eight years before resigning in 1979. Armstrong served as chairman and trustee on various corporate boards during his later life. He shunned publicity, preferring to live quietly in Cincinnati, Ohio.
