Armstrong Neil

Neil Armstrong Signed NASA Apollo XI Portrait, Handsomely Presented

Official NASA portrait of Apollo XI Commander Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), signed by him in felt-tip marker as "Neil Ag" over his left sleeve at lower right. The color photograph shows Armstrong in his white astronaut's suit standing in front of a blown-up image of the moon, his helmet placed on a pedestal in front of him. Handsomely presented, the marbleized cream mat with beveled edges. The mahogany-finished frame is lined with gilt filet, and fitted with a red velvet backing and easel support. Not examined out of frame. The sight size of the photograph is 7.25" x 9.25" while the overall frame size is 11.75" x 14" x 1.25". Frame with expected surface wear.

Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. Many remember the thrilling black and white footage of Armstrong's July 21, 1969 moon walk, yet that was just the triumphant culmination of a space mission that actually lasted over 8 days. The 3-person crew consisted of Commander Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins (born 1930), and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (born 1930). While on the moon, the astronauts took photographs; placed a TV camera, American flag, and plaque on the surface; collected geological samples; set up seismic and laser experiments; and even received a celebratory phone call from President Nixon.

Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) was no stranger to space and its study, gaining both applied and abstract experience as a Navy aviator, independent test pilot, NASA astronaut, and university professor. Armstrong retired from the space program shortly after his famous 1969 Apollo XI moon walk, and taught at the University of Cincinnati for eight years before resigning in 1979. Armstrong served as chairman and trustee on various corporate boards during his later life. He shunned publicity, preferring to live quietly in Cincinnati, Ohio.
