Description:

Armstrong Neil

Bifold holiday card signed by first man on the moon Neil Armstrong as "Neil Armstrong" in blue ball point pen along bottom of interior. The card, with a cutaway window surrounded by gilt embossed border, depicts a red clapboarded barn and silo in a winter landscape. In near fine condition, measuring 7" x 5".

This card, signed with only Armstrong's signature, might date from the period of his separation from Janet Shearon Armstrong. The former astronaut and his wife of thirty-eight years were granted a joint dissolution of marriage in 1994. Armstrong married second wife Carol Held Knight Armstrong (born 1945) later that year. This card, with its bucolic agrarian imagery, might have resonated with Armstrong, who lived on a 300-acre farm between 1997 and his death in 2012.

Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) was no stranger to space and its study, gaining both applied and abstract experience as a Navy aviator, independent test pilot, NASA astronaut, and university professor. Armstrong retired from the space program shortly after his famous 1969 Apollo XI moon walk, and taught at the University of Cincinnati for eight years before resigning in 1979. Armstrong served as chairman and trustee on various corporate boards during his later life. He shunned publicity, preferring to live quietly in Cincinnati, Ohio.
