The front of the book has been inscribed "This belongs to the House." With minor wear and a small hole at the binding of the cover. Areas of ink staining. Boldly signed throughout by Horatio Mann.

Thomas Cadwalader (1779-1841) was the son of General John Cadwalader, who served under George Washington and was a senior officer of the volunteer militia, the Philadelphia Associators. At 16, Thomas graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and studied law. He became a successful lawyer, military officer, and Philadelphia socialite, and married Mary Biddle, the daughter of Clement Biddle. During his successful legal career, he represented the extended Penn family interests as their American agent, assisting in the dispersal of their lands. He also followed in his father's footsteps and became captain of Philadelphia’s Second City Troop in 1809. During the War of 1812, he served on Philadelphia’s Committee of Defense. After the war, Cadwalader enjoyed a prosperous social life. In 1824, he hosted a reception for the Marquis de Lafayette on his return trip to the United States and was also close friends with Nicholas Biddle, president of the Bank of the United States, and Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of the French emperor Napoleon.
